I graduated from Carleton University in Ottawa, Canada, in 2009 with a Bachelor of Journalism (B.J.) combined Honours degree (Journalism and Psychology). After my graduation, I worked as a newspaper reporter in Edmonton, Canada, and then headed to Rwanda where I reported for the English newscast at a radio station in the capital of Kigali. Working as a journalist involved covering a variety of topics – but one that I always found interesting was the environment. Learning about the environmental concerns and policies pertaining to cities and countries across the globe greatly intrigue me. As a result, I was extremely excited when I learnt that I would be moving to Washington, D.C., to intern with UNEP’s Regional Office for North America (UNEP RONA) - an organization dedicated to raising awareness on the importance of environmental preservation.
While only having been at UNEP RONA for less than one week, I felt welcome the moment I stepped into the office. The staff members are always willing to assist in answering any questions and embrace each intern as a valued member of the UNEP RONA team. During my time here, I will be working on a variety of projects including the International Children’s Painting Competition on the Environment, the launch of UNEP RONA’s new website, daily media monitoring and more.
I hope to learn more about environmental initiatives being undertaken within North America while gaining a better understanding of how international organizations operate and collaborate with other institutions. I am sure this will be an enriching experience.
